it is very hard for me to empathize with those who espouse racism, sexism, homophobia [insert mechanism of oppression]. no one is inherently oppressive, although some groups are conditioned towards it through their unearned privileges. but empathy is more than one’s ability to feel the tragedies and triumphs of those who we feel akin to. it is the ability to contextualize and understand peoples’ experiences even when there’s very little redeeming about them. how else can we walk with people towards the truth of love?
